Privacy Policy
Newsfolio is operated by a sole trader business based in England. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we use it. We take your privacy seriously and only collect what we need to run the service.
If you have any questions about this policy, email us at contact@newsfolio.app and we'll get back to you promptly.
1. Who we are
The data controller for Newsfolio is the sole trader operating Newsfolio, based in England. Contact: contact@newsfolio.app.
2. What data we collect
When you create an account and use Newsfolio, we collect the following:
- Email address — used to create your account and send essential communications.
- Username and display name — chosen by you, shown on your profile and in the social feed.
- Portfolio holdings — the stocks and quantities you enter to personalise your news feed and portfolio view.
- Posts and comments — content you choose to publish in the Newsfolio social feed.
We do not collect payment information, precise location data, or any sensitive personal data.
3. How we use your data
We use your data solely to provide and improve Newsfolio:
- To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- To personalise your news feed based on your portfolio holdings.
- To display your posts and comments in the social feed.
- To send essential account emails (e.g. password resets).
We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.
4. Legal basis for processing (UK GDPR)
We process your data under the following legal bases:
- Contract performance — processing necessary to provide the Newsfolio service you signed up for.
- Legitimate interests — improving the service and keeping it secure.
- Consent — where you have explicitly agreed (e.g. optional communications).
5. Third-party services
Newsfolio uses the following third-party services to operate:
- Supabase — database and authentication (data stored in EU region).
- Railway — backend hosting.
- Netlify — frontend hosting.
- Finnhub / financial data providers — live market data (no personal data shared).
- Anthropic Claude API — AI-powered news summaries, portfolio analysis, and screenshot import. When you use the AI screenshot import feature, your image is sent to the Claude API for analysis and is never stored — it is discarded immediately after processing. No personal account data is included in these requests.
Each provider has their own privacy policy governing their data handling.
AI Features: Newsfolio uses third-party AI services to power Folio AI features, including news summaries, portfolio insights, and the daily AI digest. Content you submit for AI analysis (such as portfolio data and news queries) may be processed by these services. We do not sell this data to third parties.
6. Cookies
Newsfolio uses only essential cookies required to keep you logged in (authentication session cookies via Supabase). We do not use advertising or analytics cookies. You can clear cookies at any time via your browser settings, though this will log you out.
7. Data retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it longer.
8. Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate data.
- Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten").
- Restrict or object to processing.
- Data portability.
- Withdraw consent at any time (where processing is based on consent).
To exercise any of these rights, email contact@newsfolio.app. We will respond within 30 days.
9. Security
We implement reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), row-level security on our database, and restricted access to production systems. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Children
Newsfolio is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
